As most of you have probably noticed, yesterday an 18+ Master/slave roleplay put up an advertisement in our advertisement & affiliation section. Some of you have already queried as to whether this is allowed; as you may know, our policy for affiliation is that we request 18+ roleplays don't affiliate with us, as that's not the kind of audience we'd like to be associated with.
Our decision on the matter is thus: we're allowing the advertisement, because we believe everyone has the right to advertise. The ad is not explicit or graphic in any way, and doesn't violate the Proboards ToS. However, we are not going to be posting an advertisement of our own on their website, and we're not going to seek affiliation with the website, in accordance with our affiliation policy.
I'd like to take this opportunity to clarify the difference between advertisements and affiliation, since there's a bit of confusion on the subject.
An advertisement is, quite simply, making a post to advertise our forum on another roleplaying community. It's the internet equivalent of putting up a flier - 'Roleplaying group seeks new members' pinned to a noticeboard in a meeting hall, for example.
An affiliation is much more like associating with the community. When we affiliate with a website, we post a little icon linking to their site down in our affiliation section, and they do the same for our icon. That way our two sites link to each other, and it's a way to actively network roleplaying communities.
Please note that our affiliation policy does not cover our advertisement policy. Advertisements don't have a policy; if we think they're inappropriate (for example, if the Master/slave roleplay had included graphic descriptions or examples of roleplay) they'll be removed. Luckily (or perhaps not) we're not exactly flooded with advertisements; the affiliation policy is partially there before we also have an ad for affiliates up on another roleplaying index.
