Located in an impenetrable cosmic dust cloud ominously referred to as the Cloak of the Sith and once the capital of Darth Ruin's Sith Empire, easily navigable routes to Roon had long been lost. Even the most complete accounts, located in the Baobab Archives on Manda, are sketchy at best. and the lockdown of information following the rise of the Galactic Empire seemed to seal Roon's fate as a planet lost to history. This was fine to native Roonians; the planet was largely self-sufficient and plentiful in resources. Following the Galactic Civil war it became known that there were only two routes to the planet itself, the near suicidal Deathwind hyperspace corridor from Ryloth, used by criminals and smugglers and the Manda Roon merchant route through the cloak of the Sith discovered by Mungo Baobab following the annual Rainbow Comet. With the establishment of Lightbeacon stations along its length this route made the planet easily accessible all year around
Surrounded by a lethal ring of asteroids and meteors, Roon was located in an Outer Rim Territories system of the same name. Like nearby Ryloth, Roon only rotated on its axis once every orbit around the sun, rendering one side constantly bright and the other side constantly dark. Unlike Ryloth, however, the lit side of the world was not scorching, nor was the dark side frigid; this phenomenon may be due to cloud cover, or an extensive ozone layer. Whatever the reason, Roon long served as a staging point for spice smugglers coming from Ryloth. A member of the New Republic, largely thanks to its isolation, Roon remained untouched by the Yuuzhan Vong War and became a member of the newly formed Galactic Alliance. With its population too small to have its own representative in the senate it was represented by the Abrion sectors senator and overseen by a politically appointed governor. Its defense was left to a small locally recruited Militia.
The Obsidian Union spotting an opportunity mounted a covert raid, first disabling the Light beacons and all off planet communications. Then captured startegic locations throughout Nunurra, the Police/Militia Hq, the Planetary Armoury, the Council Chambers and the Governors residence. Taking the families of the Governor and other prominent citizens hostage, the Union secretly took control of the planet whilst leaving the G.A under the impression that it still belongs to them.
Roon is now one of the Union's most closely guarded secrets. A Fleet Rest and Recreation base complete with ship repair facilities has been constructed on the planet and placed under the permanent command of a Admiral who is also effectively the planet's military governor. This base allows for the build up of taskforces for invasions or operations without the knowledge of our enemies. It also allows us to rotate our ships on the frontlines for refits and to give their crews shoreleave in a risk free atmosphere. In order to keep this secret the planet is never referred to by name in any transmission or message no matter how well encrypted and its location and identity are highly restricted within Fleet or Ships computers. When referring to the planet, by order of the Military Executor Darth Reaver, all personnel will call it by its codename: Respite.
