Union Federal Military Headquarters on Yaxon VI:
A bleak and barren world on the Coreward border of Sith Space, Yaxon VI is the traditional home of the Union’s military.
Geography and Terrain:
Yaxon VI is a lifeless world, lacking even native microbes. Water is not present in even trace amounts and there is no humidity on the planet. Strangely enough Yaxon has a breathable atmosphere. Scientists have theorized that this is a holdover from pre-history when Yaxon may have supported life. Yaxon’s massive size and lack of native life are what have kept the atmosphere intact or so the theory goes. The presence of the Union Federal Military has meant an end to this stasis, however, and it is estimated that Yaxon has fifty years of oxygen left.
Belied by the rocky, barren, heat-blasted terrain of Yaxon is the fact that no useful metals or minerals are present in the lithosphere. One of the great mysteries of Yaxon VI is the presence of clouds. As one would expect, these clouds are not made of water vapor but of some unidentified gas. Where this gas came from and why it is only found in cloud-form has stumped some of the greatest scientific minds in the Galaxy. Repeated testing, however, has shown that this mysterious gas has no practical use other than blocking Yaxon’s unforgiving sun.
Pre-modern History:
Prior to the rise of the Union Yaxon VI saw very little use. The lack of resources ensured that no one felt the need to invest in colonizing the planet. Prior to the modern period, only the Ancient Sith Empire had any presence on Yaxon. Even this was minimal, however. It was used as an outpost for Sith explorers during the reign of Ajunta Pall and Ludo Kressh briefly hid on the planet after faking his death. This is the full extent of Yaxon’s known ancient history, however.
Formation of the Union Defense Force:
Yaxon VI suddenly became very useful to the fledgling Union, however, as it happened to be placed perfectly to serve as the Union’s first line of defense. As a result, the Union Defense Force chose to make its headquarters here. The actual fortress was constructed in a style and from materials brought back from the Unknown Regions by UDF Commander Darth Unrivaled.
The First Union Civil War and the First Battle of Yaxon VI:
Yaxon VI was one of the two chief Sith’ar strongholds during the First Union Civil War, the other being Malachor V. As a result, the conquest of Yaxon VI was a chief priority for the Sith Loyalists. The First Battle of Yaxon occurred when Loyalist forces led by Lady Vidia (then called Darth Maja’der) faced the bulk of the Sith’ar Fleet in orbit over Yaxon. The initial Loyalist stratagem did not call for victory; only intending to distract the Sith’ar fleet while Darth Xaos and his Loyalist Sith assaulted the Sith’ar Academy on Malachor. The battle went far better for the Loyalists than originally planned, however.
The Loyalists were both outnumbered and outgunned. The Sith’ar commanded the loyalty of most of the Union Defense Force and controlled what had been the Union’s flagship, a strange Star Dreadnaught brought back by Darth Unrivaled from the Unknown Regions. It was thought impossible by both sides for the Loyalists to triumph. However, as the battle continued, the Loyalists displayed tactics and maneuvers that mitigated the Sith’ar advantage and would eventually become standard for fighting the Galactic Alliance. The Sith’ar forces were being commanded by Sith’ar who had gone with Darth Unrivaled on his journey into the Unknown Regions. These commanders had little to no experience fighting in the Outer Rim. The Loyalist forces, however, were mostly native to the regions around Sith Space and used this familiarity to their advantage.
The end of the battle was signaled when Loyalist bombers penetrated the Sith’ar Flagship’s defenses and successfully bombed its engines. The spectacular explosion caught the attention of all the combatants and mere moments later Darth Maja’der shot down Darth Asariel’s starfighter leaving Yaxon VI’s defenders without any Sith’ar to lead them. The defenders immediately surrendered and a few hours later, on Malachor V, Darth Xaos struck down the Sith’ar leader Darth Raziel bringing the First Union Civil War to a close.
The Second Battle of Yaxon VI:
After the reformation of the Union into its current form, Yaxon VI continued to be used as the military heart of the Union. The new Union Federal Military had no interest in ignoring strategic value due to a checkered past and established themselves in the old Union Defense Force’s fortress. When rumors that Darth Xaos had been killed by a group called the Seven Kings began to circulate, the Galactic Alliance took the opportunity to strike at Yaxon VI.
The UFM, led by then Military Executor Darth Venom, defended Yaxon VI stoutly. Though they found their position reversed from the First Battle, the UFM still found itself outnumbered and outgunned. Using similar tactics that relied on familiarity with local space proved useful but Union victory required several new tactics to be pioneered. One of which, called starbathing, has remained standard for use against the GA. Starbathing has it roots in a distinctly Outer Rim test of a spacer’s daring which involved flying as close as possible to a sun. The idea behind this being only those bold and skilled can stay just close enough to avoid radiation poisoning while still maneuvering around solar flares. Since this was a skill set usually lacked by GA pilots, luring GA fighters into starbaths became hugely popular after it proved hugely useful during the Second Battle of Yaxon VI.
Yet, what ultimately would prove to be the foremost Union advantage both during the Second Battle and in future conflicts was the will to fight. While the GA Defense Force was quite war weary after decades of major conflicts, the Union soldiers felt they were fighting for the freedom and safety of their homeworlds. This intense devotion provided a major morale edge. After the GA fleet had taken more losses than had been calculated would result from a GA victory (while the Union fleet was still mostly intact) they fled. Within a standard day Darth Xaos sent out a broadcast from New Bethrezen, proving he was alive. This remains one of the greatest humiliations for the GA during their conflict with the Union.
