In the aftermath of the Great Hyperspace War the Dark Lord Naga Sadow fled to Yavin IV. Accompanied by his most loyal Massassi warriors, they constructed scores of temples in which to dwell. The grandest of these came to be called the Great Temple. In time these Massassi would swear allegiance to a new Dark Lord, Exar Kun. Their devotion was so great that the Massassi sacrificed themselves for Kun's transformation into a Dark Side Spirit. During the Galactic Civil War the Great Temple served as a rebel base. With the rise of the New Republic it was turned into the Jedi Praxeum.
During the Yuuzhan Vong invasion the Jedi were forced to abandon the Praxeum. After the defeat of the Vong, however, the Galactic Alliance began to use the Temple as a redoubt. This changed during the opening phases of the Snowfall Campaign when the Obsidian Union took the Yavin system. Though of little strategic importance this was a major spiritual victory for the Union.
The Temple is currently occupied and operated by the Dark Disciples. The Disciples have consecrated it as a temple-complex to Exar Kun and Naga Sadow. Though Kun's spirit was banished by the Jedi, the Disciples perform rituals nightly designed to weaken the gauntlet that keeps him in Chaos. Reports of Exar Kun appearing in the dreams and meditations of Temple residents suggests that these are working.
Though not as much so as the Hermitage of Korriban, the Great Temple is a significant pilgrimage site. This, combined with the fact that it lies near Union trade lanes, means that one can find a wide variety of individuals here. Lately many Massassi from the Red Sith Clans have taken up residence here; seeking a connection with their ancestors.
