The roots of the New Sith Brotherhood stretch back many decades before the Obsidian Union’s formation. The Brotherhood began its existence as the New Sith Order. This Order was founded by Darth Groznii; one of Palpatine’s former lieutenants who declared himself Dark Lord of the Sith after the Emperor’s final death. Lurking in the Deep Core, Groznii began to assemble legions and fleets with which to launch an eventual invasion of the New Republic. Darth Groznii was unconcerned with the Rule of Two and discovered surviving Sith of previous eras, secret apprentices of former Sith Lords and raw talents in the Force to establish a New Sith Order. A Sith Council was established from his first and foremost recruits to help govern the Order and spread subtle influence into the wider Galaxy while Groznii built up his forces. In time Groznii came to believe the apprentices of the Order were more loyal to the Council than to him. When he moved against the Council he was proven right, the majority of Sith sided with the Councilors and Darth Groznii was overthrown.
What followed was a period of uncertainty and strife for the Sith. The Council agreed to rule as an oligarchy rather than name a new Dark Lord but this arrangement sunk into infighting and coup attempts. Conflicts with other groups also claiming to be the new incarnation of the Sith directed focus away from the ultimately goal of revenge against the Jedi. Eventually the shadowy, underworld empires of the Sith coalesced under the rule of a new Dark Lord: Darth Xaos. It was under his reign that the New Sith Order would be transformed into the New Sith Brotherhood. This name change represented a reformation which Xaos intended to end the millennia-old pattern of Sith turning against Sith.
Forging agreements with planets which felt alienated from Galactic society in the wake of the Yuuzhan Vong War, the Brotherhood established the Obsidian Union, which was territorially centered on the historical heart of Sith territory instead of the Deep Core as Groznii had planned. Though at first dismissed by the Galactic Alliance as a regional insurrection the Obsidian Union greatly expanded its territory in an offensive known as the Snowfall Campaign. The offensive took its name from its final battle: Operation Snowfall. This was a raid on Coruscant by Union forces that shocked the entire Galaxy. By the campaign’s conclusion the Union had already been joined by such great powers as the Hutts.
But Darth Xaos’ ambition would prove to be his undoing when the Dark Lord met his demise at the hands of Luke Skywalker. In the wake of Xaos’ death infighting again re-emerged amongst the Sith. Yet this time the conflict was swiftly put to an end by belief in the Brotherhood’s founding ideals. Darth Lucifer claimed the mantle of Dark Lord of the Sith. Though many, even closest to him, tested Lucifer’s authority after his ascension, the new Dark Lord was able, without resorting to bloodshed, to rebuild many bonds that had been severed by Xaos’ death. Now reunited under a Dark Lord, the New Sith Brotherhood and Obsidian Union prepare to strike back against a Galactic Alliance that has grown complacent in the wake of their foe’s setbacks...
