Sunlight shone down through the green, glass walls of the Jedi Temple on Coruscant and illuminated a floating garden therein. It was in this garden that a Cerean Padawan sat in mediation. Sunny days seemed rare on Coruscant to Chi-Ki-Meyee and she was intent on enjoying this one. As her mind drifted down different avenues of contemplation, the Cerean Jedi couldn't help but keep returning to the notion that the Jedi Order had changed so much since she had joined. When Chi-Ki had first come to the Jedi on Ossus it was mere weeks after the end of the Galactic Civil War. The feeling of optimism that permeated 19 ABY had carried over into the early '20s. Even though a struggle against the Shadow Academy had rocked the Jedi soon after, Chi-Ki largely remembered those years as peaceful in retrospect.
The Yuuzhan Vong War had washed away those happy days like a bloody tide. Chi had been lucky enough to be far from the front lines throughout that war but she had seen first hand the horrible devastation left behind by the extra-galactic invaders. The Cerean girl had hoped with the Vong's surrender that the Galaxy she remembered would return. But it never did. For over a year after the war there was so much sorrow, so much frustration. Wherever Chi-Ki-Meyee went in those days she could feel it simmering under the surface. Then the repressed anger exploded.
A radical group calling itself the Obsidian Union emerged in the Outer Rim. They claimed the Galactic Alliance was a conspiracy by the Core worlds and the Jedi Order to exploit the people and launched revolutions and secessions on various planets. But most frightening, the Unionists were led by Dark-Siders calling themselves the New Sith Brotherhood. Despite the best efforts of the Jedi and GA military alike, the Unionist Crisis grew like wildfire over the next three years. Master Skywalker moved the main Jedi Temple from Ossus to Coruscant at the government's request. Chi had been very sad to leave behind the planet on which she had studied the Jedi arts for most of her life. Her sorrow deepened with a surprise Unionist raid on Coruscant that leveled the Jedi Temple soon after. Like during the Vong War, she had been lucky enough to be away from this trauma but it terrified everyone. In their fear the Senate had even elected a former Imperial admiral, Natasi Daala, as Chief-of-State. And though the Temple had been rebuilt almost exactly, Chi-Ki could still tell the difference both in the structure itself and in the hearts of its inhabitants.
The Cerean opened her eyes as she felt the familiar presence of her master enter the garden. Trycia Bedsan walked towards her Padawan with purposefulness and calm. Chi knew enough about her teacher to realize that Trycia had something important to discuss.
