Aboard the Astral Dragon, a similar level, but a more sinister quality, of mirth was elicited by the Hopper's flight path. Had the medium transport's crew been aware of their counterparts' glee, they might have been less bold in surging forward.
"Tha Rihkxyrks 'ave 'erded 'em inta range just like ya planned, cap'n," one of the pirates announced.
"Tell the boys to pull their fighters back a few dozen klicks," Kas ordered, grinning like a Karkarodon, "Then bring 'er about and fire up all the fore tractor beams."
For a moment, Chi-Ki-Meyee felt a surge of pride as the assault fighters broke off their attack. In that brief instant she thought that her shooting had driven off the enemy just in time to make the jump to hyperspace. But she, along with her Jedi comrades, had their elation crushed when the Nebula Hopper only lurched and stuttered spasmodically when its hyperdrive was activated.
"They've got us in tractor-lock!" Ido blurted out in panic as he realized what was happening. Disaster built upon disaster when, seeing the GR-75 had been immobilized, the starfighters turned about and swooped towards their prey once more. Now that they were no longer harassing the transport into a specific flight path they moved in for the killing blow. Approaching from an angle that ensured their fire would not be pulled in by the Dragon's beams, the pirate fighters launched concussion missiles at the command pod in order to "decapitate" the GR-75.
Though the other Jedi spent the last seconds of their lives desperately trying to break the tractor-lock, Trycia looked up to see to the incoming missiles. Her mind turning to the turbolift at the back of the command pod, the Twi'lek knew she had time to save one person. The proximity of the gunner's station to the turbolift assuaged Trycia's concerns about favoritism as she acted to put Chi-Ki in the lift. By telekinetically opening the doors, using Force Push to quickly deposit her Padawan then utilizing telekinesis again to activate the lift, Trycia's final actions saved Chi-Ki from the fiery explosion that claimed all the others within the command pod.
But haste and unfortunate consequences are often companions. At the conclusion of her Force-propelled flight, Chi-Ki's head struck the turbolift wall violently. She felt an intensely sharp pain inside her skull as her vision grew blurry and her hearing dimmed. A monotonous ringing and a strange, metallic taste overwhelmed the Cerean's senses as she sank into unconsciousness.
White light slowly broke through an unfathomable darkness as Chi-Ki-Meyee returned incrementally to a waking state. The beep-beep of medical monitors began to sink in as the undifferentiated light focused into a ceiling and curtains. Chi tried to move but found it too difficult so she lay still, her mind cloudy and weighted, until she heard the sound of servos growing closer.
A medical droid entered her field of vision and examined her for a time before asking, "Can you hear me, mistress?"
